3 Ways AI Will Transform Law Firms

The AI Revolution in Law

AI is revolutionizing industries worldwide, and the legal profession is no exception. From drafting contracts to conducting legal research, artificial intelligence is poised to reshape the way law firms operate. For example, GPT-4, an advanced AI language model, has already passed the Bar Exam, outperforming many human candidates. This breakthrough is just a glimpse into how AI will drive unprecedented efficiency and accuracy in legal work.

A McKinsey & Company report from 2023 found that nearly 40% of large law firms have already integrated AI into their operations, with smaller firms following closely behind. By 2025, Gartner predicts that AI will handle 75% of legal work related to corporate transactions. According to a 2023 survey by the American Bar Association, 44% of respondents feel that artificial intelligence will become mainstream in the legal profession in the next three years. Clearly, the legal profession is on the brink of an AI-driven revolution, and firms that fail to adapt risk falling behind.

Here are three powerful ways AI will reshape the legal landscape, enabling firms to work smarter, not harder.

1. Reducing Workload: Freeing Lawyers to Focus on High-Level Strategy

Two Economics PhD candidates at MIT examined the productivity effects of the impact of ChatGPT on white collar productivity. And the results are pretty spectacular.

The team asked 444 knowledge workers to do writing and editing tasks along the lines of marketing, grant writing, data analysis, and human resources and then split the group into two: one that used ChatGPT and one that did not. The ChatGPT using group was 37% faster at completing tasks with similar grades (level of quality), and as the workers repeated their tasks for improvement the ChatGPT groups quality went up significantly faster. In other words, ChatGPT did make work speedier with no sacrifice in quality and then made it easier to 'improve work quickly' using the tool.

In the law context, AI can take over time-consuming, repetitive tasks, such as contract analysis, document review, and routine case management. This not only reduces the workload of legal teams but also frees up lawyers to concentrate on higher-level strategic thinking. By automating tasks like document discovery and compliance checks, attorneys can shift their focus to crafting innovative legal strategies, negotiating deals, and providing advisory services that require human expertise.

In practice, AI tools can sift through massive amounts of data in seconds, performing tasks that would take a team of lawyers days or even weeks to complete. As a result, law firms can streamline operations and manage workloads more effectively, all while maintaining high levels of accuracy.

2. Supercharging Document Review and Research

In recent years, German courts have received an unprecedented flood of proceedings that have overwhelmed the judiciary and resulted in delayed proceedings, hearings, and outcomes. At the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court in Frankfurt, judges working on these cases were soon faced with a backlog of more than 10,000 cases. The judges have to spend hours reading long electronic pleading files in the proceedings. The documents could be hundreds of pages and usually differ in only a few case-specific features.

The Ministry of Justice in Baden-Württemberg recommended using AI with natural language understanding (NLU) and other capabilities to help categorize each case into the different case groups they were handling. An AI assistant named OLGA was implemented. With OLGA, judges and clerks can sift through thousands of documents faster and use specific search criteria to find relevant information from various documents. Additionally, the system would provide information on the lawsuit to contextualize the information that surfaced from the search. The algorithm preserved the case history and gave users a comprehensive view of all the information for the case and where it originated. The judges are relieved of highly repetitive tasks and can concentrate on the complex issues, and the courts report they envision the processing time of cases can potentially be reduced by over 50%.

The accuracy of AI in legal research is unmatched. By cross-referencing millions of documents and filtering results based on specific criteria, these tools minimize the risk of human error while drastically improving efficiency. What once took hours can now be done in minutes, empowering legal professionals to deliver faster, more precise insights to their clients.

3. Enhancing Client Service with Faster Response Times

The UK energy supplier Octopus Energy has built conversational AI into its customer service channels and says that it is now responsible for handling inquiries. The bot reportedly does the work of 250 people and receives higher customer satisfaction ratings than human customer service agents. This is a prime example of how contact centers will increasingly incorporate generative AI chat and voice tools to deal with straightforward, easily repeatable tasks. And, of course, these tools give customers 24/7 access to support, 365 days a year, via multiple channels (such as phone, online chat, and social media messaging).

Just as AI helps businesses like UK energy suppliers handle customer inquiries faster, similar AI tools can help law firms respond promptly to clients' needs. From answering routine questions to updating clients on case progress, AI chatbots and case management tools provide round-the-clock service, enhancing client satisfaction. In an age where clients expect quick answers, AI can help law firms meet the demand for rapid, high-quality responses. From chatbots that can handle routine inquiries to AI-driven case management systems, technology is speeding up the time it takes to address client needs. Automated systems can quickly sift through case files, answer common legal questions, or provide updates on case progress, allowing firms to respond to clients almost instantly.
